The above links tell the history , facts and
legends about the poinsettia.
Contrary to popular belief, poinsettias are
NOT poisonous.
I don't know how anyone could eat them anyway,
I tried to and they really are not appetizing at all. Actually, they taste rather terrible. If you want to eat a good tasting
flower, try hybiscus. They are very sweet and great for breakfast. :-)
I try my best to eat them daily. My neighbor
has a hybiscus that is taller than our fence. I reach up, and grab a nice new flower just as I head out to work and
when I come home in the afternoons. Eat the tender ones. They taste the best. There is a small drop of honey at the
base of the flower, if you get your timing right. One word of caution: do not eat the stamen. The pollen will stick in your
throat and cause some discomfort.
My Lovely and Most Talented Sister, Suzette,
and I sell poinsettias every year, mostly on preorder.
She is the Brains of the operation, I am the
Braun.
The is the Lily, I am the Rose. :-)
In 2004, we had 6 colors for sale: Red- the
most solicited, Pink, White- actually a cream color, Marble Star- The Perfect Poinsettia for Astonomers, Monet Twilight- Beautiful,
wonderfully tall and very striking- like the sunsets in winter, and Jingle Bells- Second most solicited color.
We were also honored by the grower with a
very limited amount of BURGANDY an extremely striking and exceedingly exotic color.
